How to Care for Your Pearl Jewelry

Once you have made your selection of pearl jewelry, hopefully from the excellent selection at Kingston Fine Jewelry, we are eager to have you take care of your purchase so it will bring you a "lifetime" of pleasure. We offer the following suggestions.

Cultured pearls should be treated with care, because they are precious. They should be stored in a case or box with a soft "wrapping" like tissue paper, or in a chamois cloth. This will keep them from becoming scratched and damaged by hard edges, harder stones or metals.

Your cultured pearls should be kept away from hair sprays, perfumes, cosmetics, and colognes. Such acid-based materials can damage the pearl's luster. Put your pearls on only after you have done your makeup and applied your fragrance.

Pearls should only be cleaned with a professional pearl cleaner. They may be washed with a mild soap and water, which will help to remove traces of cosmetics, perfume, hair spray and perspiration. Chemicals and any abrasive materials should never be used.

When storing or traveling with pearls, store them in such a way that they do not rub up against one another, or up against other jewelry pieces. Hard metal edges or stones may easily scratch your pearls.

Pearls should regularly be restrung once a year. The stringing on your pearls becomes weakened by cosmetics and through ordinary wear. As the nylon thread stretches it may eventually break. Restringing is a job for a professional jeweler, who will have the pearls restrung and individually knotted. Leave your pearls only with someone you can trust!

The staff at Kingston Fine Jewelry has been expertly trained to help you select one or several pieces of pearl jewelry. We take great pains in the pearls we acquire, because we want our customers always to get the best value in their purchases. Pearls are always in fashion and we would enjoy helping you to add pearl jewelry to your jewelry wardrobe.
