What You Should Know About
Colored Gemstones
Part II

All fine jewelry needs to be pampered. Taking care of your gemstone jewelry will, no doubt, extend its life span. There are just a few things you may wish to keep in mind:

  • Daily Handling:
Put on your jewelry after you put on perfume, hair spray and makeup. All of these can dull the shine of your gemstones (especially so with cultured pearls).

  • Daily Wear:
Take off jewelry before you do any cleaning, gardening, swimming . . . anywhere where your jewelry will be exposed to dust, dirt, chemicals, abrasives or possible damage.

  • Nighttime Routine:
After you remove your jewelry, wipe it gently with a soft cloth. This will help to remove any residues which may have accumulated during the day. Place and store your jewelry in a soft case, in a way that it doesn't knock against other pieces which may scratch it.

  • Insurance:
Be sure to discuss insurance of valuables with your jeweler and your insurance agent.

  • Special Cleaning:
We will be pleased to tell you how to have your jewelry cleaned professionally. At-home, ultrasonic equipment should be avoided unless you are absolutely certain that your jewelry is suited for such. Some jewelry may be cleaned, at-some, with a mild soap solution and a soft brush. Please ask. We will be happy to provide you with information about the appropriate care of your gemstone jewelry, so it gives you many years of pleasure.

  • Yearly Security Check
It's a really good idea to bring your jewelry into us once a year, so we can check the security of the settings. Prongs and clasps sometimes weaken or loosen with constant wear. Ring fingers change size and your rings may need resizing. On occasion, gemstones may need to be professionally repolished to restore their original shine. Ask us about any or all of these services. We'll be happy to assist you.

With the proper care, your gemstone jewelry will give you many years of wearing pleasure.
