Minerals as Gemstones

What are popularly called "gemstones," in reality are minerals. Because gemstones are minerals, when purchasing a gemstone it is important to make yourself aware of the characteristics of the mineral as it would impact on the piece of jewelry you are buying. As reputable jewelers, our staff will be happy to tell you about any gemstone you are interested in purchasing.

The questions we can answer for you include:

  1. How easy will it be to repair this stone if it becomes damaged?
  2. How will it take to the heat that may be needed to repair it?
  3. Will putting pressure on the stone cause it to fracture?
  4. How delicate is the stone? In every day wearing will it chip, flake or crack easily? The MOH scale of hardness indicates that some stones are very fragile and are best worn for special occasions rather than everyday. Less durable stones are better worn as earrings and pendants, rather than as rings which take more of a beating.
This is a fairly complete list of gemstones/minerals. It is a wonderful project to find out about each, to pick your favorites and buy jewelry pieces made from those stones. Kingston Fine Jewelry has an extensive, ever-changing inventory of the most popular gemstones.
