Caring for Your Emerald Jewelry

If you are fortunate enough to own one or pieces of emerald jewelry, then you will want to make certain that you care for them properly. The good news is that emeralds are a fairly durable gem, harder than other gems such as opals, pearls, red corals and tanzanites. Albeit they are actually harder than most steel, they can be fractured if hit “just the right way.”

Your emerald jewelry should be taken off before you engage in any heavy household activity. It’s a good idea to keep a small bowl near your sink, so you can place your emerald jewelry in it when you wash dishes, or scrub pots. Keep in mind that a sharp blow can result in a fracture, or fractures, resulting in permanent damage to your stone(s).

In the same way as you care for your other gemstone jewelry, clean your emerald pieces when they are dirty, or after they have been worn several times. A “rubdown” with a soft moist cloth is all you’ll need on a regular basis. If you want your gems to be cleaned professionally, most jewelers will be able to accommodate you.

Under no circumstances should you clean your emerald jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner or steamer, because emeralds fair badly with rapid temperature changes and high heat. Most emeralds are treated with natural oils to enhance their durability and appearance. Exposure to heat can dry the oils and negatively affect the appearance of the gemstone. Even direct sunlight can adversely affect the appearance of your emeralds.

Finally, it’s best to store your emerald jewelry in a cushioned box where pieces will not rub up against one another. Take care of your emerald gemstone jewelry and you will be able to enjoy it for many years to come.
